Gold

The uniqueness of gold. Gold combines four characteristics that make it a treasured possession- lustrous beauty, rarity, durability and ease of workability.

How do you know if it is real gold? Always look for a Karat mark, such as 10K, 14K, 18K, etc., plus the manufacturer’s trademark. The Karat mark refers to the purity of gold. Gold in its purest state, 24 Karat, is considered too soft for the use in jewelry. It must be alloyed with other base metals to increase the durability and workability. Nothing less than 10K can legally be marked or sold as gold jewelry in the United States. Some jewelry is processed with a layer of gold, or plating of gold, and must be marked “gold filled” or “HGE,” signifying heavy god electroplate. Only Karat gold jewelry is real gold and offers the characteristics

of the precious metal.
